Workshop Description

You are invited to join a learning community of international school educators coming together for two days in Amsterdam. We will dive deeply into the what, why, and how of LGBTQ+ safety, equity and belonging in schools.

Day 1 will focus on the what and why of LGBTQ+ matters in international schools, using research-backed lenses, and honoring a range of personal experiences. You will take away foundational knowledge about LGBTQ+ child development, vocabulary and key concepts, as well as a framework for considering decision-making.

Day 2 will guide you in developing an individualized LGBTQ+ equity commitment plan, specific to your role, context, and priorities within international education. You will be provided with a menu of relevant options from which to choose and personalize to your own practice.

 

Who should attend?

People working in the field of international education are encouraged to attend, regardless of gender identity or sexual identity. The content of the workshop is designed to be applicable for a range of roles within international education, such as senior leadership, counselors, staff, teachers, school nurses, curriculum directors, and DEIJ coordinators. We welcome those just getting started in LGBTQ+ equity work, as well as those with some prior experience.

·      Deepen understanding of LGBTQ+ concepts and language

·      Access research around best practices for LGBTQ+ safety, equity, and belonging within schools

·      Practice tools for extending equity practice beyond the self into your school community

·      Position LGBTQ+ equity within the broader DEIJ landscape

·      Reflect on personal connection to LGBTQ+ equity, including an examination of one’s own personal and professional context

·      Build confidence in supporting LGBTQ+ students and other school community members

·      Strengthen community with international educators working toward LGBTQ+ safety, equity, and belonging

·      Design a personalized commitment plan to take home and move your practice forward after the event

Emily Meadows

Dr. Emily Meadows (she/her) is an LGBTQ+ consultant specialized in international schools. In addition to her doctoral degree, Emily holds master’s degrees in both Sexual Health and Counseling, and has worked as an international school counselor for over a decade. She researches, publishes, and trains school communities on equitable policy and practice, while also teaching for the LGBT Health Policy & Practice graduate program at George Washington University. Emily is a Council of International Schools affiliated consultant and an International Schools Services affiliated consultant, and has developed inclusion standards, referenda, and trainings for professional organizations such as the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC), the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP), The Fulbright Commission, the Association for International Educators and Leaders of Color (AIELOC), the Association for the Advancement of International Education (AAIE) and the American Psychological Association (APA). Having spent more than half of her life in international schools, Emily specializes in culturally-relevant solutions to promote equity and belonging worldwide.
