Moving “Making” Beyond STEM: Exploring Dispositions, Cultural Participation, and Systems Literacy through Design and Maker-Centered Learning

Educational initiatives that emphasize making, engineering, and tinkering are becoming increasingly popular in K-12 education around the world. But what is truly worthwhile about design and makercentered learning, and how might the approaches of maker-centered learning have relevance for classrooms and school subjects far outside of traditional “making” environments?

Led by researchers Edward P. Clapp and Andrea Sachdeva, this two-day interactive workshop session will begin with a full-day introduction to the framework for maker-centered learning developed by the Agency by Design research initiative at Project Zero, a research center at the Harvard Graduate School of Education.

This exploration will lead into a second day, in which attendees will participate in a series of hands-on activities designed to explore systems thinking and the concept of participatory creativity. Connections between these ideas and participants’ home teaching and learning environments will be made throughout both workshop days.

Understanding Goals/Throughlines

  • What are the promises, practices, and pedagogies associated with maker-centered learning?

  • What does making look like across the curriculum?

  • What is “systems thinking?” Why is it important? And how can it be supported through maker-centered learning?

  • What is “participatory creativity?” Why is it important? And how can it be supported through maker-centered learning?

Schedule

DAY 1

  • What is maker-centered learning? Surfacing seeing ourselves as makers.

  • Introducing the Agency by Design framework for maker-centered learning: maker empowerment, sensitivity to design, and the three maker capacities.

  • Making in action: Engaging with the Agency by Design thinking routines.

  • LUNCH

  • Looking for evidence of the maker capacities in action.

  • Exploring implications for teaching and learning: Educator tools, resources, and strategies.

DAY 2

  • Reflections from Day 1.

  • Making Connections 1: What is systems thinking and why is it important?

  • Seeing the bigger picture: Understanding the relationship between systems thinking and maker-centered learning.

  • Implications for practice.

  • LUNCH

  • Making Connections 2: What is participatory creativity and why is it important.

  • Design and making as participation: Understanding the relationship between participatory creativity and maker-centered learning.

  • Implications for practice.

  • Closing reflections.

Edward P. Clapp

Principal investigator at Project Zero

Edward P. Clapp is a principal investigator at Project Zero where he is a co-director of the Agency by Design initiative—an investigation of the promises, practices, and pedagogies of maker-centered learning—and the Creating Communities of Innovation initiative—a research study geared towards developing educational innovations amongst a network of schools in the United Arab Emirates.

Edward’s current research interests include creativity and innovation, maker-centered learning, design thinking, and contemporary approaches to arts teaching and learning. In addition to his work as an educational researcher, Edward is also a Lecturer on Education at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Edward’s most recent books include Participatory Creativity: Introducing Access and Equity to the Creative Classroom (2016, Routledge) and Maker-Centered Learning: Empowering Young People to Shape their Worlds (2016, Jossey-Bass).

Andrea Rose Sachdeva

Senior Research Manager for Project Zero’s Agency by Design

Andrea Rose Sachdeva is Senior Research Manager for Project Zero’s Agency by Design research initiative and Senior Project Manager for the Creating Communities of Innovation research initiative. Growing out of her background in arts learning and interdisciplinary design environments, Andrea brings with her experience as an administrator, teacher, assessment consultant, researcher, and learner. Prior to her work with Project Zero, for ten years Andrea led educational programs at Le Laboratoire Cambridge (Le Lab), a cultural center focused on cross-disciplinary idea development and public engagement. This work included the development and scaling of Le Lab’s flagship ArtScience Prize program to sites around the world. Her work focuses on design- and maker-centered learning environments, projects that value “learning by doing” and approaches to documentation and assessment in settings that that don’t easily fit in the box of traditional education.
