WIDA Institute Implementing the WIDA Standards and Assessment System in International Contexts

Why come

An interactive, four-day introduction to the WIDA English Language Development standards framework and assessments, this WIDA Institutewill help schools to build capacity for a systemic approach to using WIDA resources to serve multilingual learners.

Fee includes coffee/refreshments and lunch for four days.

Participants also receive a copy of the WIDA Essential Actions Handbook and The WIDA International English Language Development Standards and Resource Guide, 2017 edition.


Event details

The WIDA Institute is an interactive, four-day opportunity for educators to gain an in-depth introduction to the WIDA English Language Development framework to help differentiate instruction for multilingual learners in international schools.

Participants in this Institute will engage with components of the WIDA Standards and Assessment system and explore how it can be implemented in their context. During the Institute, participants will use the WIDA standards framework to analyze the academic language demands of content standards at their school and learn how to create an instructional and assessment plan based on the needs of their students.

Participants will also have opportunities to develop context-specific implementation plans for communication and collaboration with staff members. Institute participants will also benefit from networking opportunities with international educators both in person and through an online community forum. (Please note: this WIDA Institute was previously titled the WIDA International Academy.)

Who should attend?

• Any international educators who assess and work with multilingual learners

• EAL teachers, admissions officers, administrators who are interested in using WIDA assessments

• EAL teachers, content teachers, administrators who want to learn more about the WIDA English Language Development standards framework and instructional resources

Schools are encouraged to send teams of educators to build capacity for implementation.

  • 08:00–08:30 am  – Coffee and refreshments

  • 08:30 – 12:00  – Morning Session (including coffee break)

  • 12:00 – 13:00 – Lunch (provided)

  • 13:00 – 16:00  – Afternoon session (including coffee break)

*Note: The afternoon session of the final day of the Academy will conclude at 15:00pm

Troy Dassler

Professional Development Outreach Specialist with WIDA

Troy Dassler is a Professional Development Outreach Specialist with WIDA. He has 20 years of teaching experience in ESL/Bilingual Education. He also belongs to the National Association of Science Teachers, Wisconsin Society of Science Teachers, and is part of the national implementation team for the Next Generation of Science Standards. He has been awarded the Toyota Tapestry Award, Top Notch Teacher, and ING Unsung Hero Award. He also gave a TEDx talk on bringing nanoscale science to elementary students.  He started his career as a Peace Corps Volunteer teaching in Los Chiles de Alajuela in Costa Rica.
