The challenging new reality for educators at every level today is this: schools were not built for this moment. Increasingly, today’s children have the newfound ability to learn in powerful ways that don’t require classrooms, teachers, or curriculum in the traditional sense. In fact, it’s arguable that the role of modern schooling should be to help students develop into self-directed, self-determined learners first and foremost, rather than maintaining a focus on delivering discrete buckets of knowledge that in most cases is quickly forgotten and rarely applied.
In this workshop, we will explore the larger questions that surround schools and education today. What does powerful learning look like in the modern world? What new lenses for our work must we create to maintain our relevance as teachers and schools? What beliefs and values about learning and schooling are now most important to stay true to? What are the amazing possibilities for classroom learning as evidenced by schools that are transforming their practice from around the world? And how do we create cultures in school communities that put learning at the center and have the agility to constantly innovate and change?

Who is it for
This highly interactive workshop is for educators of every level who are seeking to better understand what’s now possible in terms of effective, relevant, modern practice in classrooms and schools. It will be especially engaging and useful for those willing to challenge their beliefs, to learn more deeply about the world around them, and to entertain reimagining our work in schools at a deep level.
Workshop goals:
To build the capacity of professional learners/educators to understand the modern learning world more deeply and to make better, more relevant decisions about their practice to benefit the students they serve today.

Understand the modern contexts for learning and schooling created by globally networked technologies.
Acquire a clear grasp of the future trends for education, higher education, and the workplace.
Have developed a personal learning manifesto.
Understand a change process driven by the Modern Learners’ Lens.
Create strategies for educating community members and for changing school and classroom cultures.
Identify successful modern learning practices from schools and districts around the world, and determine how to apply these practices in your school.
Develop a personal plan for implementing modern learning practices.

Will Richardson
Author, Speaker
Will Richardson has spent the last dozen years developing an international reputation as a leading thinker and writer about the intersection of social online learning networks, education, and systemic change. He was one of a handful of original education bloggers (willrichardson.com), and his work has appeared in numerous journals, newspapers, and magazines such as Ed Leadership, District Administration, Education Week, The New York Times and English Journal. He is an outspoken advocate for change in schools and classrooms in the context of the diverse new learning opportunities that the Web and other technologies now offer, and has spoken to and worked with educators in over 20 countries on six continents to understand the opportunities and challenges of learning in the modern world. In 2017, he was named one of 100 global “Changemakers in Education” by the Finnish site HundrED, and was named one of the Top 5 “Edupreneurs to Follow” by Forbes. Will has authored six books, most recently From Master Teacher to Master Learner(2015, Solution Tree Press). In total, his books have sold over 250,000 copies worldwide. A former public school educator of 22 years, Will is a co-founder of Modern Learner Media and co-publisher of ModernLearners.com which is a site dedicated to helping educational leaders and policymakers develop new contexts for new conversations around education. Most recently, Will co-founded Change.Schooland, in addition, the ChangeLeaders.Community, two online destinations for educational leaders interested in creating relevant, sustainable change in schools using a coaching, curation, and community approach. Will lives in rural New Jersey with his wife Wendy and, depending on the day, his children Tess and Tucker.
